    I was just following the Agile Australia conference hashtag (#agileaus) on Twitter when Sandy's name came up. When I read about her conference talk is saw words like self-organizing teams. OK. I know that one. That's what scrum teams do well. But then I saw the term self-selection. Self-selection? Does than mean I can put myself on my team at work I want?   • 058 Fred Fowler Scrum Is for Figuring It Out

    Fred Fowler changed the way I think about agile. And specifically how I think about scrum. He helped me realize that scrum is for projects that require you to figure it out. That's why scrum works so well for software projects because the speed and frequency at which software needs to be shipped, we are always figuring it out. Waterfall methods of work are for work that you've already figured out. You may use scrum to figure out how to build a house. When you are ready to take that house and build 50 of them, you wouldn't use scrum anymore. Software projects aren't the only type of work that requires a continuous process of figuring it out.  Fred Fowler is scrum certified. He has is Profession Scrum Masters (PSM I and PSM II). He is also only one of 50 people or show with his PSM III. He also offers enterprise coaching services and training classes to help people become PSM certified.     Keith Mattes, senior program manager / Gainsight administrator at Pearson, joins Nice Work to talk about how reduce support case resolution connecting Jira and Salesforce. Along the way, he also broke down silos by connecting development teams with customer support teams. He did this in the face of organizational resistance. As in most organizations, there are barriers to trying new things, especially connecting systems and integrating data across them. On the journey to overcome this resistance, Keith asked a lot of questions, questioned the status quo (politely, we might add), and got Jira and Salesforce connected. There is a lesson here in challenging the status quo with questions...it helped that Keith was new to the teach and could ask the "Huh" and "Why" questions that most people, who have been on a team a long time, can be afraid to ask.     Help desks are not the only teams that take and fulfill requests from employees in organizations. Marketing teams are asked to approve copy. Facilities teams are asked to fix broken doors. Legal teams are asked to review contracts. The difference is that help desk teams do not have a reputation of being a black hole. Everyone knows that they can fill out a form and get help. Even if it is "eventually." This is not the same for business teams. Most of the time, we need to know who in marketing or facilities or legal, we need to ask. Then we send an email.     We met Kimberly Deal at Atlassian Summit 2019. Actually, we met her in the conference app a week before Summit. We planned to meet in person, but we both got so busy it never happen. So we met up with her after Summit and pressed record. We had a fun conversation. Kimberly is a 2X certified Atlassian professional and is working on her third. She is also an Atlassian User Group (AUG) Leader for Columbus, Ohio. One of the interesting things we talked about is why Kimberly liked the Training Theater at Summit so much. "You are already certified. Why would you go to training?" Kimberly replied wisely: "There might be tidbits and tricks I might not know." Ah. Refreshing. Beginners mind. Even though she is certified, she finds herself in her work in Jira, for example, taking the long way to do some action. You may recall from episode 34 that we interviewed Jeff Tillett, Senior Build and Release Engineering Manager at AppDynamics and Dallas Atlassian User Group (AUG) Leader from the floor at Atlassian Summit. After that interview, Jeff told us his daughter helped organize the Dallas AUGs, and....well....after hearing that, how could we not get his daughter, Kaitlynn Tillett, on the show. So we did. Not only does Kaitlynn help her dad organize the AUG...and use Confluence to do it..Kaitlynn uses Confluence for all communications in her scout troop group. No more messy email lists. She no longer needs to resend emails to troop parents who claim they did not receive the email with details about the weekend camping trip. Her answer to everything is now, "It's on Confluence. In fact, her role at KPMG UK is in part to translate client project business requirements into Jira projects and Confluence space and then onboard and training both KPMG engagement teams and the clients they will invite into the Jira project and Confluence space for the project.
